Toyota Provides Students with Opportunities to Build a Better World

Ranked as one of the world’s leading auto manufacturers and a pioneer in corporate responsibility, Toyota distinguishes itself in the corporate world for its philanthropic efforts—ranging from educational initiatives to ensuring automotive safety and safeguarding our environment. In partnering with TELACU, Toyota is empowering our Scholars to achieve the advanced degrees they need to excel and become leaders in our global community.

In 2007 Toyota premiered as a Presenting Sponsor of our Annual Scholarship Awards Dinner and joined the Foundation in providing vital academic and financial resources to the 25 Toyota/TELACU Scholars and 10 David C. Lizárraga Graduate Fellows.

In the area of medicine, 2007 Lizárraga Fellow Miguel Castillo has assisted in the development and implementation of a community diabetic health program outside of his studies at Johns Hopkins University, where he is pursuing both an MBA and Masters degree in Public Health.

“With the support of this Fellowship, I am closer to achieving my dream of developing sustainable health care solutions,” says Miguel, who was recently selected as a Fulbright Scholar and placed at an international business firm.

Ismael Díaz Herrera, another 2007 Lizárraga Fellow, earned his Masters in Education Policy and Management from Harvard University. Inspired by his Fellowship experience, Ismael launched his own college scholarship fund for high school seniors in Mendota and Firebaugh, California. He was also recently selected for the Jesse M. Unruh Assembly Fellowship, in which he will assist California State Assembly Members in formulating comprehensive policy to improve the quality of life for state residents.

This year, Toyota continues providing valuable support to both our Graduate Fellows and Toyota/TELACU Scholars, talented young men and women who are committed to advancing our society through a variety of fields, including business, engineering, law, public policy and education. Toyota is helping unlock a world of new opportunities for these students, empowering them to make a difference.
