East LA High School Graduate to Live Her Dream at MIT

TELACU Equips Local Students to Succeed in Universities Nationwide

As a 6th-grader at Hollenbeck Middle School, Madeline Salazar wrote prophetically in her application for TELACU’s Talent Search Program: “Seven years from now I will probably be a student at a college or university. I will be a mini-engineer.”

After seven years of engaging in the Program’s college preparation workshops and receiving one-on-one academic guidance from Program staff, Madeline was accepted into MIT—the 4th best college in the nation and home to the #1-ranked engineering school, according to U.S. News & World Report.

“Talent Search not only equipped me to submit the best college application I could possibly prepare, but also provided me with the invaluable support and encouragement I needed to become the student I am today,” said Madeline, who will be studying mechanical engineering at MIT in Fall 2009. “This Program has guided me every step of the way toward achieving my ultimate dream—engineering affordable prosthetics for disabled residents in underserved communities.”

In addition to providing weekly seminars and advisement, Talent Search staff prepared Madeline for her dream college career by helping her secure empowering educational opportunities—including the MIT Women’s Technology Program, a 4-week summer residential and academic experience for selected high school students. When the time came to apply to MIT, Madeline had the energizing confidence she needed to craft an essay and resume reflecting her extraordinary talent and the skills she had gained.

As part of TELACU’s commitment to its Scholars’ continued educational advancement, Talent Search staff recently met with Madeline’s parents, longtime residents of Boyle Heights, to advise them on how to support their daughter during this significant transition. Mr. and Mrs. Salazar were provided insight into the challenges Madeline would face at a rigorous program in an out-of-state university, as well as the extraordinary success she was ready and prepared to achieve as a young engineer.

The TELACU Education Foundation’s Talent Search Program provides middle and high school students with the comprehensive academic support and guidance they need to succeed in school and pursue higher education. A full 100% of high school seniors graduate and pursue post-secondary education.
