After proudly serving in the U.S. Navy for nearly nine years, Nohemi admits to “feeling lost and unsure of her future” during her transition back to civilian life. But as a participant in TELACU’s Veterans Upward Bound Program, she made connections with people and resources that helped her reacclimate and steered her toward a successful path to higher education. A stellar student, she earned straight As and was selected to represent Whittier College at the Student Veterans Leadership Institute in Washington DC where she toured the White House, engaged with the Department of Veterans Affairs, and networked with 50 other veteran scholars—she even reunited with a shipmate she hadn’t seen in more than a decade! She also attended the Student Veterans of America National Conference in Colorado Springs and met other amazing former servicemen and women who helped her realize all that is possible when veterans lead with purpose. She continues to serve her fellow veterans as a Member Service Representative at the Navy Federal Credit Union, and she plans to do even more once she earns her Master’s and becomes a Certified Public Accountant.
